Kumasi

The cultural capital of Ghana and seat of the Ashanti Kingdom, known for palaces, craft markets, and royal ceremonies.

Kumasi is where Ghana's soul lives. As the historic seat of the Ashanti Kingdom — one of West Africa's most powerful pre-colonial empires — the city is steeped in royal tradition. The Manhyia Palace Museum brings that history to life with artefacts, photographs, and guided accounts of the Ashanti wars. Nearby, the vast Kejetia Market is one of the largest open-air markets in Africa — a labyrinthine world of textiles, spices, metalwork, and colour. Just outside the city, the village of Bonwire is where kente cloth has been woven by hand for centuries, and visitors can watch master weavers at work and buy direct. Sitting at around 300 metres above sea level, Kumasi enjoys a cooler, greener climate than the coast.
