Ghana

Volta Region

Ghana's scenic highland escape — waterfalls, rainforest hikes, a sacred monkey sanctuary, and authentic village life.

The Volta Region is Ghana's most dramatically scenic landscape — rolling hills, misty highlands, and cascading waterfalls that draw hikers and nature lovers from across West Africa. Wli Falls, the highest waterfall in the region, requires a 45-minute walk through lush rainforest to reach and rewards visitors with a plunging curtain of water into a cool natural pool. The nearby Tafi Atome Monkey Sanctuary is home to troops of semi-wild Mona monkeys accustomed to human company. For more adventurous travellers, Mount Afadjato — Ghana's highest peak — can be climbed in a half-day with a local guide, offering panoramic views across the border into Togo. The town of Ho is the regional hub, with guesthouses and restaurants for an overnight stay.

Local tips

Tip

Hire a community guide for the Wli Falls hike — trails fork and guides directly support local incomes. Carry sufficient cash as ATMs outside Ho are scarce. The Monkey Sanctuary charges a small community fee that goes directly to the village.
